Henderson transfers to Tech for her junior year after setting the Lamar record for RBI in a season.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech softball head coach Adrian Gregory has signed Lamar transfer Shelby Henderson to an Athletic Scholarship Agreement (ASA) with Texas Tech, the program announced Monday.

A native of Keller, Texas, Henderson will be immediately eligible to join the Red Raiders as a junior for the 2019 season. She played two seasons at Lamar from 2017-18, setting the school record with 44 RBI her sophomore season on her way to All-Southland Conference Second Team recognition.

“We are very excited about the addition of Shelby,” Gregory said. “She is an extremely versatile player that has already had success in the college game and comes with leadership experience gained while she was at Lamar. We believe she will have a direct impact and influence with our young team. We are looking forward to a very bright year!”

Henderson started 117 of a possible 121 games in her two years at Lamar. She made 46 starts at first base and 10 starts at catcher last season and led the Cardinals with a .573 slugging percentage, 14 doubles and 44 RBI. She tied for the team-lead with eight home runs while hitting .327 overall and .345 in league play.

Her freshman season, she helped Lamar to a 34-31 record and an appearance in the finals of the NISC. She batted .210 for the year with 28 RBI, none bigger than in the NISC regional finals when she knocked in the winning run with a walk-off single against Louisiana-Monroe for a 3-2 win.

Henderson played four years of varsity softball at Keller High School. She helped Keller win the 2016 Class 6A Texas State Championship, earning a nod to the all-tournament team as a catcher. She batted .309 as a freshman, .391 as a sophomore, .354 as a junior and .370 as a senior, hitting 15 home runs with 145 RBI during her four-year career.

During her time at Keller, Henderson was a three-time academic all-district selection, a member of the National Honor Society and received the school’s Letter K Award for academic excellence. She played travel ball for Mizuno Impulse and DFW Firecrackers Gold.

Henderson joins DePaul pitcher Missy Zoch as the second transfer this summer. Overall, Gregory is currently slated to add 10 newcomers to what was one of the youngest rosters in the nation in 2018.
