Lady Raider Basketball Make Vegas Holiday Return

(LUBBOCK) The Texas Tech Lady Raiders will compete at South Point Arena on Nov. 24-25 for the first time this season in the Las Vegas Thanksgiving Classic tournament. On Friday, Tech will play the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 8:30 p.m. CT; on Saturday, it will play the Santa Clara Broncos at 6 p.m. CT.

With a 3-2 series lead, Texas Tech (5-0) has played Rutgers five times in the program’s history. The Scarlet Knights defeated Tech, 61-52, on Nov. 30, 2013. Throughout program history, Santa Clara and the Lady Raiders faced each other four times, and both teams won twice. The last time, the Broncos won 75-70 against the Lady Raiders on Dec. 12, 2015.

On Monday evening, Tech defeated the UTSA Roadrunners 63-58. Lady Raiders forced 11 turnovers in the second quarter in addition to 18 turnovers in the first half, the most in a half in at least 10 years. Tech also forced 31 total turnovers in the game against the Roadrunners, the most this season and the first time Tech has forced more than 25 turnovers in a game since 2019.

Jasmine Shavers and Bailey Maupin scored double digits in the first five games of the season against UTSA, something no other Lady Raider duo has done in the past century. In a career-best 38 minutes, Maupin scored 18 points added six rebounds, four assists, and a steal in a game against UTSA. Two rebounds, two assists, and three steals rounded out Shaver’s’ 15 points on Monday night.

Rutgers currently holds a record of 3-3 this season, claiming victories against Monmouth (56-51), Wagner (86-43), and Saint Francis (80-51) while facing defeats from Auburn (56-76), Seton Hall (63-82), and Fairfield (54-78). Destiny Adams leads the team in scoring with an average of 13.5 points per game, closely followed by Kaylene Smikle with 12.2 points per game. Notably, Adams also contributes 9.2 rebounds per game, as well as 13 steals and seven blocks. In terms of overall stats, Rutgers averages 65.8 points per game and limits their opponents to an average of only 63.5 points per game and a .364 shooting percentage. Additionally, the team boasts an average of 43.2 rebounds per game, 12 assists per game, and 8.3 steals per game.

This season, Santa Clara has won four games against Hawai’i (62-51), San Jose State (55-47), Oregon (89-50) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (75-54). Only on Nov. 8 did the Broncos lose to California, 56-71. Tess Heal leads the Broncos in scoring with 18.0 points per game, followed by Olivia Pollerd with 11.0 points per game. Marya Hudgins leads the Broncos with 7.5 points per game, while Heal leads the team with 24 assists, and Ashley Hiraki leads with 16 steals.
