Texas Tech Tackles Michigan In Bahamas Battle

Texas Tech and Michigan will play in the fifth-sixth place game at Imperial Arena on Friday at 5 p.m. (CST) at the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis.

Joe Toussaint led Tech with 21 points against UNI, while Pop Isaacs contributed 18, including a game-winning shot with 0.8 seconds left on the clock. Darrion Williams and Devan Cambridge also had solid performances, scoring 10 points to match a season-high with four players in double figures. This impressive comeback follows last season’s record-breaking 23-point comeback against Iowa State.

The key to Thursday’s win was limiting turnovers, with only eight for the entire game. Additionally, Tech capitalized on UNI’s mistakes with an 18-6 advantage in points off turnovers. They also had a strong showing at the free-throw line, shooting 16-for-19 and dominating in the paint with a 20-10 advantage in the second half. Despite their impressive performance against Villanova, hitting a season-high 14 three-pointers, they could not overcome the Wildcats’ dominance in rebounding and free throws, ultimately losing by a score of 85-69.

Tech had limited teams to 50.7 points per game through three games, ranking third nationally. After Villanova’s scoring output, that average rose to 59.3 and is now 61.4 after the win over UNI. Tech remains in the top 25 in this category.

Before joining Michigan, Burnett played for Texas Tech as a true freshman in the 2020-21 season, then decided to transfer to Alabama and eventually joined the Wolverines. He is averaging 10.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game for Michigan.

Tech has an all-time advantage of 3-0 over Michigan. During the 2019 Sweet 16 in Anaheim, California, the Red Raiders rolled to a 63-44 win to advance to the Elite 8 and eventually the Final Four. Tech and Michigan played their first two games in El Paso in 1978 and 1983. Jarrett Culver scored 22 points for Tech, and Davide Moretti scored 15 points with three 3-pointers in the 2019 Sweet 16 matchup.

Tech is playing in its first Battle 4 Atlantis but returns to Paradise Island after playing against the Bahamas National Team and Mega Bemax from Serbia on its 2019 Summer Tour.

In their fourth away game but first actual road game, the Red Raiders will face Butler on Thursday, November 30, at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
