Lady Raiders Defeat Houston In Big12 Opener

The Texas Tech Lady Raiders beat the Houston Cougars, 79-71.

(Houston)    On Saturday afternoon in Fertitta Center on the University of Houston campus, sophomore Jada Wynn led the Lady Raiders (12-2, 1-0 Big 12) in scoring with a career-best 23 points and six 3-pointers against Houston (9-3, 0-1 Big 12) while going 5-of-5 at the free throw line. Adding three rebounds, steals, and assists to his 19 points in the game, Bailey Maupin scored on 60 percent shooting.

There were two more Lady Raiders in double figures, as Kilah Freelon scored 10 points with three rebounds, three blocks, and three steals and Jasmine Shavers scored 10 points with six rebounds and two assists. Aside from scoring seven points and six boards, Jordyn Merritt also added two assists and a block. Lady Raiders forced 22 turnovers and shot 24 of 44 (54.5 percent) from the field and 10 of 19 from the 3-point line.

The Lady Raiders struggled to score in the beginning of the third quarter, with their first point not coming until two minutes in on a free throw by Maupin. Then, at the 6:45 mark, Wynn was fouled while attempting a 3-pointer and sunk all three of her free throws, giving Tech a 55-37 lead. Houston managed to go on a 9-2 run before Shavers scored on a second-chance layup and Merritt stole the ball for a fastbreak basket, extending Tech’s advantage to 60-46. Shavers and Wynn added more points before the quarter ended with Tech leading 65-53.

Despite outscoring Tech 18-14 in the quarter, Texas Tech defeated Houston and won its first road conference opener in 11 years by 79-71.

The Lady Raiders continue their Big12 conference play in Lubbock with a game against No. 5 Texas on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 6 p.m. in the United Supermarkets Arena.
